The real reason enterprise AI is stuck

Author - Enrique Dans

The seventh article sharpens the technical and conceptual diagnosis: enterprise AI remains artisanal because the industry is still building from metaphors. Memory, reflection, delegation, planning, even dreaming — these words make agentic systems easier to describe, but metaphors do not industrialize. Software becomes a platform only when capability is formalized into abstractions, invariants, grammars, and reusable structures. Relational databases needed the relational model. The web needed resources, URIs, HTTP, and HTML. ERP needed a formal representation of enterprise operations. Enterprise AI needs the same kind of formal layer: one capable of representing identity, state, permissions, constraints, workflows, outcomes, and valid transitions. Without that, every deployment remains a translation exercise. With it, a platform becomes possible.
